Septic problems rarely become more convenient when they are ignored. A slow drain may have a simple cause, but repeated backups, sewage odors, wet ground, or an alarm can also point to a septic system that needs professional attention.

This guide explains what to watch for, how to prepare your property for service, and how to care for your system between visits. You do not need to diagnose the problem before calling Boyce’s Septic Service. Tell us what you have noticed, and we will evaluate the property in person before finalizing an estimate.

Warning signs that deserve attention

One symptom does not always identify the cause. Look at the pattern and pay attention when a problem repeats, affects several fixtures, or appears near the septic system.

Common warning signs include:

  • Toilets, tubs, or sinks draining slowly in more than one part of the property.
  • Gurgling sounds from drains or toilets.
  • Sewage odors inside or outside.
  • Wastewater backing up through a toilet, tub, shower, or floor drain.
  • Wet, soggy, or unusually green ground near the tank or drainfield.
  • Standing water or surfacing wastewater around the system.
  • A septic or aerobic-system alarm.
  • A system that has not been inspected or pumped in several years.

If sewage is backing up indoors or surfacing outside, reduce nonessential water use, keep people and pets away from the affected area, and call for service. Avoid opening a tank, entering a tank, or trying to excavate the system yourself.

What to know before you call

Customers are not expected to know the cause or the exact repair they need. A short description of what is happening is enough to begin.

Helpful information includes:

  • What you noticed and when it started.
  • Whether the problem is constant or comes and goes.
  • Which fixtures or parts of the property are affected.
  • The last known pumping, inspection, or repair date, if you know it.
  • Whether the property has a conventional septic system, aerobic system, or another type, if known.
  • Any gate, access, parking, or animal information that could affect the visit.
  • Existing permits, diagrams, or service records, if they are easy to locate.

Do not delay calling because some of this information is unavailable. The onsite visit is what allows Boyce’s Septic Service to examine the actual conditions and determine the appropriate next step.

How to prepare the property for septic service

A clear and safe work area helps the service visit move efficiently.

Before the scheduled visit:

  1. Provide clear access. Unlock gates and share any directions needed to reach the property or system area.
  2. Move vehicles and equipment. Keep driveways and likely access routes open for the service truck.
  3. Secure pets. Keep animals away from the work area and any open gates.
  4. Keep children and visitors clear. Septic service involves heavy equipment and areas that should remain undisturbed.
  5. Point out known system locations. If you already know where the tank, access lids, alarm, or drainfield is located, show the crew. You are not expected to find or uncover components yourself.
  6. Protect the tank and drainfield. Do not park, drive, dig, or place heavy materials over the system area.
  7. Have available records ready. Previous pumping dates, repair notes, permits, or diagrams may help if they are available.

Unless Boyce’s Septic Service specifically asks you to do otherwise, do not uncover lids, excavate the tank, enter any septic component, or attempt a repair before the crew arrives.

What happens during the onsite visit

Every property and septic system is different. Boyce’s Septic Service evaluates the areas that may be involved before finalizing an estimate.

The visit may include:

  • Reviewing the symptoms you reported.
  • Walking over the areas that may be affected.
  • Identifying accessible system components and site conditions.
  • Determining whether pumping, maintenance, repair, or additional investigation appears appropriate.
  • Explaining the recommended next step based on what can be observed onsite.

Photos and descriptions can help explain the situation, but they do not replace the required in-person walkover of the work area.

How often should a septic tank be pumped?

There is no single schedule that fits every property. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years and household systems should generally be inspected at least every three years. Texas guidance also commonly recommends pumping conventional tanks every three to five years.

The right timing can change based on:

  • Tank size.
  • Number of people using the system.
  • Total wastewater use.
  • The amount of solids in the tank.
  • Garbage-disposal use.
  • System design and mechanical components.
  • Past service findings.
  • Local permitting or maintenance requirements.

Alternative and aerobic systems can require more frequent attention. Follow the requirements for your system and local permitting authority, and use the condition found during professional service to plan the next visit.

Everyday habits that protect a septic system

Use water efficiently

Large amounts of water entering the system at once can interfere with treatment and move wastewater through the system too quickly. Repair leaks, spread laundry across the week when practical, and avoid stacking several heavy water-use activities together.

Be careful about what goes down the drain

Toilets are intended for human waste and toilet paper. Wipes, paper towels, hygiene products, diapers, cat litter, and other trash belong in the garbage, even when packaging describes an item as flushable.

Keep fats, oils, grease, paint, solvents, pesticides, fuels, and other harsh chemicals out of household drains. Septic systems are designed for domestic wastewater, not hazardous or industrial waste.

Protect the drainfield

Keep vehicles, heavy equipment, structures, and deep-rooted plantings away from the drainfield. Direct roof drains, sump pumps, and large volumes of stormwater away from the system area when possible. Watch for wet ground, odors, or changes in vegetation that could signal a problem.

Keep service records

Record pumping, inspection, maintenance, and repair dates. Keep any permits, diagrams, service reports, and recommended follow-up dates together. Good records help future service providers understand the system and help property owners avoid relying on memory.

Do not use additives as a substitute for service

An additive cannot remove the solids that accumulate in a tank or replace inspection and pumping. Ask a qualified professional before adding a treatment product, especially if the system is already showing warning signs.

Pumping, maintenance, or repair: what is the difference?

Septic pumping

Pumping removes accumulated liquid and solids from the tank. It may be part of routine care or one step in responding to a backup or full tank.

Septic maintenance

Maintenance focuses on checking and caring for the system so developing problems can be identified and the system can continue operating as intended. Requirements vary by system type and local rules.

Septic repair

Repair addresses a damaged, failed, leaking, obstructed, or malfunctioning part of the system. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so the affected area must be evaluated before the repair scope and estimate are finalized.

Pumping can relieve some conditions, but it is not automatically the complete answer to every backup, odor, wet area, or alarm. The onsite evaluation determines what the property actually needs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know where my septic tank is?

If you know where it is, share that information. If you do not, say so when scheduling. Do not dig or probe for the tank unless a qualified professional specifically directs you to do so.

Should I uncover the tank before the crew arrives?

Do not uncover septic components unless Boyce’s Septic Service specifically asks you to. Open tanks and excavation create serious hazards.

Can I continue using water if the system is backing up?

Reduce nonessential water use and avoid adding more wastewater to the system until the problem is evaluated. If sewage is present, keep people and pets away from the affected area.

Can Boyce’s Septic Service give a final estimate from photos or a description?

Photos and descriptions are useful background, but every estimate requires an in-person walkover of the area to be worked on before the scope and price are finalized.

Is pumping every three to five years always enough?

No. Three to five years is general guidance for many household tanks. Actual timing depends on the system, tank size, household use, accumulated solids, and local requirements.

Are aerobic systems maintained the same way as conventional systems?

No. Aerobic and other alternative systems have mechanical components and may have specific inspection, testing, reporting, or maintenance requirements. Follow the rules for the system and local permitting authority.
